Despite the crisis in the financial sector, thousands of local jobs still are open for people with financial expertise, according to the online job-listing service Indeed.com.
But the quality and availability of those jobs varies greatly, especially since the total number of O.C. real estate and finance jobs is near a five-year low. Employers have eliminated 13,700 such jobs since November 2007. (For more on that topic, see today’s Lansner on Real Estate post.)
Indeed.com’s charts of nationwide job postings from 2005 through November 2008 show a dramatic drop in GROWTH of finance-related job listings (above) but a more modest decline in those listings as a percentage of total listings (below).
By that site’s accounting, a total of 18,000 open finance-related jobs are located within 50 miles of John Wayne Airport. More than 10,000 of those were posted within the past 15 days.
In contrast, a search of the O.C. Register’s OC Jobfinder for openings that include “finance” or “financial” in their description produces 2,585 listings.
As readers of this blog have pointed out, Indeed.com doesn’t screen out duplicate listings. And the fact that a company lists a job doesn’t mean the opening will be filled. Some positions remain vacant for years, or at least until the economy rebounds.
Finance jobs listed on OCJobFinder.com and Indeed.com range from low- to high-paid and from speculative to solid.
Ameriprise is advertising for potential financial planners, assuring applicants that they “don’t need prior finance experience.”
Other advertised positions include:
- A senior financial analyst for Avery Dennison in Brea.
- A director/manager for finance function strategic services at Grant Thornton in Irvine.
- A $151,000-plus-per-year finance director for the City of Huntington Beach.
- A director of finance for the Red Mountain Retail Group in Santa Ana.
- A bilingual collections agent for Credit One in Santa Ana.
- Positions in the U.S. Navy for purchasing and supply specialists.
Plenty of the jobs are with companies that have been rocked by turmoil. AIG, for example, is seeking to hire its own financial advisors, whose pay is commission-based. Countrywide has openings ranging from a home loan consultant in Tustin to a first vice president in Irvine.
